Reishi (Jap.) Mushroom of Immortality.

Mushi_Reishi is an experiment in embodied intelligence and emergent behaviour, manifesting as organic-like structure.

I wanted to imagine how a fungus would grow within an area from a single point without prior knowledge of its surroundings. This project isn’t at its final stage and the resin printed outcome is a maquette for a larger future sculpture.

The shapes that are being created with this algorithm are being used to inform many other aspects of mmy work. I like their appearance and used them for the city-like background on my dissertation.

The final large sculpture would be made to house living algae and would be manufactured from recycled PET coming from used soda bottles. PET is food safe and translucent and so is perfect to house a living entity such as the algae I wish to grow.

To make this possible I have built a “Pullstruder” from the recreator3D design, that turns a bottle into 3D printable PET filament!
